On a sunny Saturday in May, US adventurer Joseph A. Oakes successfully completed the amazing feat of swimming across the Dardanelles in Turkey.
The sprightly 67-year old was on a tour of Turkey organized by Ms. Engin Kadaster of Newport International Travel and had obtained the necessary permission to halt all traffic on this major seaway during his 135 minute journey across 3 miles of water from the European to the Asian side of the strait.
As Byron had done around 200 years earlier, Oakes was attempting to relive the legend of Leander who would swim over the Dardanelles nightly to visit his beloved Hera.
Despite his age, Oakes participates in many such physically demanding events all over the globe. This particular feat was well covered by the national press...
